Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid glowing tributes to two distinguished Nigerians—veteran entertainer and activist Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa (Charly Boy) and renowned environmentalist and adventurer Newton Jibunoh—describing them as patriots whose lives continue to inspire generations.

In a message shared after attending separate events in Lagos and Asaba, Obi reflected on the remarkable contributions of both men to national development, social advocacy, and humanitarian service.

Speaking on the launch of 999: The Memoir of Charly Boy, held in Lagos on July 31, Obi said many people often judge Charly Boy by his unconventional appearance and public image, without appreciating the depth of his character and commitment to society.

According to him, beyond the flamboyant personality lies an intellectual, compassionate humanitarian, and patriotic Nigerian dedicated to promoting positive change.

Obi particularly praised Charly Boy’s advocacy for men’s health through his foundation. He noted that after surviving prostate cancer, the veteran entertainer has devoted his time and resources to creating awareness about the disease, encouraging early diagnosis, and supporting improved access to healthcare for men across the country.

He described quality healthcare as a cornerstone of national development and pledged his support for initiatives that promote public health and save lives.

Continuing his engagements, Obi visited the newly established Newton Jibunoh Centre and Museum in Asaba on August 1. Although he was unable to attend Jibunoh’s Mandela Day event themed “Poverty and Inequality Are in Our Hands,” he said it was important to personally honour the respected environmentalist.

Obi described Newton Jibunoh as one of Nigeria’s living legends, noting that his extraordinary life story remains a source of inspiration. He highlighted Jibunoh’s historic expeditions across the Sahara Desert to London, beginning in 1967 and repeated in later years, as enduring examples of courage, resilience, determination, and unwavering faith in the human spirit.

He observed that those remarkable journeys also remind Nigerians of a time when travelling across the country and beyond was significantly safer, adding that the comparison underscores the urgent need to restore security, unity, and national prosperity.

Peter Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from the lives of Charly Boy and Newton Jibunoh, whose commitment to service, courage, and nation-building continues to leave a lasting impact.

Reaffirming his vision for the country, Obi expressed optimism that with responsible leadership and collective commitment, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and build a brighter future.
