APC Chieftain Urges Tinubu to Rethink State Funding, Blames Governors for Nigeria’s Development Challenges

A former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism in Niger State and a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jonathan Vatsa, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the distribution of public funds to state governments, arguing that many governors have failed to translate increased allocations into meaningful development.

Vatsa maintained that the hardship experienced by many Nigerians is not solely due to a shortage of government revenue but also to what he described as poor management of resources and misplaced priorities by several state administrations.

His comments followed President Tinubu’s recent position that governors should focus less on constructing flyovers in areas with minimal traffic and instead invest in projects that directly improve infrastructure and the quality of life of citizens.

According to Vatsa, several states have embarked on expensive flyover projects despite having relatively low traffic volumes, while many of the projects remain incomplete years after construction began. He argued that such projects often fail to address the pressing needs of residents and do little to stimulate economic growth.

He further claimed that although monthly allocations to states have risen significantly in recent years, many citizens have yet to experience corresponding improvements in healthcare, education, road infrastructure, job creation, or poverty reduction. In his view, the disconnect between increased revenue and development has contributed to growing public dissatisfaction.

Vatsa also expressed concern that the political consequences of economic hardship are often directed at the President, while state governments receive comparatively less public scrutiny despite controlling substantial financial resources.

The APC chieftain urged the Federal Government to consider creating a dedicated national development intervention mechanism that would directly finance critical infrastructure and social projects across the country. He referenced previous intervention programmes established by past administrations as examples of initiatives designed to channel resources into development.

He also raised concerns about the rising debt profile of some states, arguing that governments receiving larger federal allocations should exercise greater fiscal discipline instead of accumulating loans for projects with limited public value.

On local government administration, Vatsa appealed to President Tinubu to ensure full implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government financial autonomy. He alleged that many local councils remain unable to function effectively because they do not have full control over their statutory allocations.

According to him, strengthening local government autonomy would improve grassroots governance, accelerate community development, and enhance the delivery of essential public services.

Vatsa concluded that prudent management of public funds, greater accountability by state governments, and the effective implementation of local government autonomy would help ensure that increased national revenue translates into tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

Tinubu’s primary, secondary school qualification missing from INEC EC9 documents Published

   President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s personal particulars submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 presidential election have generated public discussion after it was observed that the sections designated for his primary and secondary school qualifications were left blank.
   
   The nomination documents, published by INEC as part of its revised timetable for the 2027 general election, contain the EC9 forms and supporting credentials submitted by presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
   
   A review of President Tinubu’s EC9 form shows that, under the educational qualifications section, he listed only a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, which he stated he obtained in 1979. The sections reserved for his primary and secondary school education were not completed.
   
   However, the President attached copies of his Chicago State University degree certificate and his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate as supporting credentials accompanying his nomination papers.
   
   The omission has revived public debate over the President’s educational history, an issue that has featured prominently in Nigeria’s political discourse over the years. During the 2023 election cycle, questions surrounding President Tinubu’s academic records were the subject of legal challenges both in Nigeria and the United States. Despite the controversies, Nigerian courts upheld his election, and the Supreme Court affirmed his victory.
   
   Under Nigeria’s Constitution, a candidate for the office of President must possess at least the equivalent of a School Certificate or its equivalent. The Constitution also provides that educational qualification may be established through certificates, work experience, or other qualifications recognized by law. Legal experts have noted that the Constitution does not expressly require every level of education to be listed on the EC9 form, provided a candidate satisfies the constitutional qualification requirements.
   
   As of the time of publication, neither the Presidency nor the All Progressives Congress (APC) had issued an official statement explaining why the primary and secondary school sections were left blank in the published EC9 form.
   
   The development is expected to remain a subject of political and legal scrutiny as preparations for the 2027 general election continue.

Born into a humble family, Yinusa’s childhood was forever changed at the tender age of seven when he lost his beloved father, Late Yinusa Ajayo Joshua, a hardworking cocoa farmer who resided in Aisegba Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State. Losing a father at such a young age created a void that no child should have to experience. While many children enjoyed the comfort of a father’s guidance, he was forced to grow up quickly, learning difficult lessons about life, sacrifice, and perseverance.

His late father was known as an honest and diligent farmer whose labour on the cocoa plantations reflected the dignity of hard work. Although his father’s life was cut short, the values he left behind—honesty, humility, discipline, and integrity—became the foundation upon which Yinusa would build his own life.

Growing up without a father was never easy. There were moments of uncertainty, financial struggles, and emotional pain. Yet instead of surrendering to hardship, Yinusa embraced every challenge as an opportunity to become stronger. Those early experiences shaped him into a compassionate individual who understands the struggles of ordinary people and appreciates every opportunity life presents.

Today, Yinusa Olamilekan Felix is widely known for his passion for public service, community development, media communication, and supporting initiatives that improve people’s lives. He believes that leadership is not merely about occupying a position but about serving humanity with sincerity, accountability, and compassion.

His commitment to public service is driven by a simple belief: when communities prosper, individuals flourish.
